Menzies scholarship for Matthew Pase
Swinburne Psychology tutor Matthew Pase has been awarded the 2012 Menzies Allied Health Scholarship.
A PhD candidate, Matthew is investigating whether a healthy diet can help to counter the slowing of brain function with age.
Matthew’s research is already internationally recognised. His most recent conference presentation won the prestigious Templeton Foundation prize for best PhD paper. Another of his conference presentations was listed as a highlight at the world’s largest conference on hypertension and cardiovascular disease in Milan this year.
The Sir Robert Menzies Research Scholarship in the Allied Health Sciences provides a tax-free scholarship of $27,500 per year for two years.
Urban Consumption: new book
A new book edited by Professor Peter Newton of The Swinburne Institute for Social Research will be launched at the State of the Australian Cities Conference this week.
Urban Consumption explores the prospect for winding back current levels of household consumption in high income societies, covering such critical areas as energy, water, food, housing and travel.
The Swinburne Institute for Social Research is sponsoring the biennial conference to be held in Melbourne for the first time from 29 November until 2 December.
'insideout11': product design engineering exhibition
This year the annual product design engineering student exhibition will be held in the Advanced Technologies Centre, making it easier for Hawthorn-based staff to see the work of graduating students.
In their final year the students collaborate closely with an industry partner to research and design a market-ready product that responds directly to a social need.
They design from the ‘inside out’, engineering the product’s functionality first before focusing on user interaction and aesthetics.
The results will be on display, including a respiratory mask (pictured) to help sleep apnea sufferers and a skin cancer detection device.

The Faculty of Business and Enterprise has recently appointed two new staff members.

Selling science: the lure of the dark side

Writing in The Conversation, Swinburne Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Matthew Bailes suggests that prolonged scrutiny of climate science has revealed more about the way science works than scientists themselves might like.
