Innovation minister launches ATC
The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Senator Kim Carr formally launched Swinburne’s Advanced Technologies Centre (ATC) yesterday.
Addressing a packed auditorium, Senator Carr said the $140 million state of the art teaching and research facility will be a major boost to Australian industry. He added that it will also strengthen Swinburne's focus on advanced materials and manufacturing.
During his speech, Senator Carr announced a $250 million federal funding program to build links between industry and research and deliver important economic and social benefits for Victorians, and all Australians. Read the Swinburne media release.
This week Shadow Minster for Communications and Broadband Malcolm Turnbull also visited Swinburne, where he was taken on a tour of the ATC and the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing (CAS). At CAS, Swinburne Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Matthew Bailes demonstrated Swinburne's astronomy link-up to the Parkes 64m telescope, taking a peek at the recently discovered 'diamond planet'.
Higher Ground blog: Flipped classrooms of the future
The Higher Ground blog this week features a guest post by Swinburne’s Professor of Education Quality and Innovation, Janet Gregory.
Janet attended the EDUCAUSE 2011 conference held in Philadelphia from October 18 to 21.
The conference, themed the ‘best thinking in Higher ED IT’, featured a huge number of concurrent sessions covering information systems, security and infrastructure, leadership, governance, web and media development, and teaching and learning.
Janet shares her thoughts about one of the conference presentations that explored the 'flipped classroom' teaching model. This model is where content is provided online and homework, the practise, is done in the classroom with teachers as facilitators.
