Vc's podcast: Challenges and opportunities in 2012

Vice-Chancellor Professor Linda Kristjanson delivers an end of year video message to staff, to share some of her reflections on the past year.

Linda highlights some of the challenges and opportunities that the university will face in 2012 - in particular, the financial picture, culture, and the vision for Swinburne in 2020.

Swinburne honours education advocate

Former Swinburne Council member, Kathleen Watson, received an honorary doctorate yesterday in recognition of her support of education, the community, disadvantaged women and the university.

Kath is a well-known and warmly regarded member of the Swinburne community and was a member of the University Council from 1992 – 2004. 

In addition to her significant contributions to education, Kath has continued to balance her commitments by contributing her knowledge, skills and time to various local charities, particularly those which support disadvantaged members of the community. 

The award of Doctor of the University is the highest honour bestowed by Swinburne and was presented yesterday at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

Swinburne awarded Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Swinburne Centre for Micro-Photonics has been awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Australian Solar Institute (ASI).

The Fellowship is part of ASI’s commitment to supporting and developing Australian solar research talent.

The Fellowship will support Dr Wensheng Yan from Nangyang University of Technology to spend three years working at the Victoria Suntech Advanced Solar Facility (VSASF) at Swinburne. Research in the VSASF focuses on developing the next generation in solar technology.

Professional development opportunities in January

Staff are invited to register for a professional development short course in January 2012.

The courses are designed to offer practical application within a work environment and can lead to a qualification in a range of business disciplines.

Workshops will be conducted at the Swinburne city campus, located at 196 Flinders Street. Staff are entitled to a discount of 10 per cent off the advertised fee.

Design workshops for staff

The Faculty of Design, in collaboration with the Participatory Innovation Conference 2012, will be running three workshops during January.

Each workshop will be delivered by an international design expert. They are free and open to the public, and Swinburne staff are encouraged to attend.

School holiday Astro Tours

During the January school holiday period, the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing will be running 3D AstroTours for the general public.  The 50-minute  tour will showcase Mars, the brand new 3D movie made by Swinburne 3D Productions.

Designed for children over seven years of age and adults, the AstroTour sessions are guided by professional astronomers.

Bookings are essential and can be made with Elizabeth Thackray on ext 5569. Please arrive at least five to 10 minutes before the advertised start time.

Swinburne Health Service holiday hours

The Swinburne Health Service will be closed during the Christmas and New Year period.

The Hawthorn clinic will be closed from Friday 23 December and will reopen on Monday 9 January. For other campus dates, please contact the campus nurse or security.

 

 

Staff communications during January 2012

This is the final edition of the Staff Bulletin for 2011. The first edition for 2012 will come out on Thursday 2 February.

During January, if staff wish to communicate with the Swinburne community they may do so by having an item posted on the staff landing page or by emailing staff communications.

Alternatively, staff can post their own messages on either the Staff Bulletin Board or the Swinburne Trading Post.
