VC’s blog: A decade of partnerships in education and research in China
In her latest blog post, Vice-Chancellor Professor Linda Kristjanson (pictured with Ms Lin Li, Deputy Inspector, Ministry of Culture) reflects on her recent trip to China, where she visited both current and prospective university partners.
She also discusses the value of Swinburne’s Collaborative Articulation Program – a model of educational collaboration developed at Swinburne over the past ten years.
Vietnamese alumni chapter formed
Swinburne has established a new alumni chapter for its growing number of Vietnamese graduates ahead of moves toward closer economic ties between the two countries.
Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Mr Allaster Cox, and his colleague Consul General, Mr Graeme Swift, hosted the first annual dinners for Swinburne alumni in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City respectively.
Astro lecture: The 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics
The next astro lecture will be Co-hosted by the Australian Institute of Physics and presented Swinburne’s Professor Warrick Couch.
Warrick will speak about research that led to the accelerating universe discovery and the leadership roles that Nobel Prize in Physics winners; Brian Schmidt, Saul Perlmutter and Adam Reiss played in that discovery.
Recent efforts by Swinburne researchers to better understand the ‘dark energy’ responsible for driving the accelerating expansion will also be briefly described.
Registrations are not required.
When: Thursday 17 November, 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start. Drinks and nibbles will be provided prior to the talk.

Next Step information sessions
TAFE teaching staff are encouraged to advise their students of the upcoming Next Step information sessions.
The sessions provide students with information about pathway opportunities and transition support available through Swinburne.
Students will have an opportunity to meet with expert advisers and learn more about how a further qualification can enhance their career.
Next Step information sessions will be held on all Melbourne campuses, beginning this week.

Eighth Melbourne Computing Education Conventicle

The Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies (FICT) will host the eighth Melbourne Computing Educational Conventicle.
This is a free event for academic staff and research students who are in the computing education field.
Keynote speakers will include: Professor Mark Guzdial from the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA), who developed the Media Computation approach to teaching introductory computing, and Richard Buckland from the University of New South Wales, who has won numerous teaching awards.

Public lecture: What are the responsibilities of the affluent to address
global poverty?
The Swinburne Asia Pacific Centre for Social Investment and Philanthropy will host the 2011 Stegley Lecture, presented by Professor Thomas Pogge.
Thomas holds a number of positions including Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Affairs at Yale, and Professorial Fellow at the Australian National University.
He will raise important questions about the massive disparity between the relative wealth of most citizens in affluent countries and the poverty of people struggling elsewhere for survival.

Enrolment closing to join the Kava anxiety study
Researchers are looking for final volunteers who are experiencing chronic anxiety to participate in an eight-week study of the South Pacific plant medicine Kava in reducing anxiety.
Eligible participants must not be taking antidepressants or benzodiazepines, experience ongoing depression, or have high alcohol use.
Participants will be compensated with $100 for travel expenses. For more information, please email or call Tasha on 9214 4924.
