Academic Senate report
The third meeting of the Academic Senate was held on 16 May 2012.
Reports were received from senior managers and from the Chairs of each of the Senate's Committees.
The most significant items were the Vice Chancellor's presentation on the Swinburne 2020 Vision and Plan and a briefing from the Vice President (International and Development) on the new Streamlined Visa Processing system.
Other reports and discussions addressed the operational framework for the Academic Quality and Standards Committee and AQF requirements in Swinburne's course accreditation processes.

Professional development workshops
The Faculty of Life and Social Sciences (FLSS) is running professional development workshops for academic staff presented by Professor James Dalziel, Director, Macquarie E-Learning Centre of Excellence and ALTC National Teaching Fellow on Wednesday 30 May.
Professor Dalziel will present an address on Using Learning Design for Innovative eTeaching. This will be followed by a workshop focusing on discussion, questions and examples of innovative e-Teaching.
A hands-on workshop to foster good teaching ideas within FLSS seeks to build on existing Australian and international research to foster the successful adoption of good teaching ideas will be held in the afternoon.
Staff must register for the register for the workshops by 5.00pm on Monday 28 May.

New Frontiers conference
Staff are invited to attend two public events as part of the New Frontiers - The Western Genre in Film, Media, and Games Conference.
Professor Edward Buscombe will present The Beginnings of the Western. He will discuss how the Western was born, how film genres emerge and what are the forces that bind the Western genre and differentiate it from others?
Professor Carl Plantinga will lead the Nature of Documentary and the Digital Future workshop exploring the nature of the documentary in light of various theories and definitions, and how new digital technologies, in particular the internet, are changing documentary production, distribution and exhibition.

Swinburne Bookshop sale
The Swinburne Bookshop is having a book sale. There is a great range of general books, biographies, cooking books, gardening books and more all starting for as little as two dollars.
The Bookshop is also selling the 2012 Greater Melbourne Entertainment book, with all profits going to the CFA. The book offers hundreds of discount food and entertainment vouchers that can be used around Melbourne.
The sale will run until the end of June.
Using Microsft OneNote to transform learning
Lenovo, Microsoft and Swinburne have come together to deliver two practical, hands-on tours of Microsoft OneNote® and how it can be used to improve teaching and learning.
Suitable for academic staff and Phd students, each session will focus on how to use Microsoft OneNote® to collaborate, research and create curricula, and will cover:
• Templates/colours
• Creating a section, pages and notebook
• Importing graphics / documents
• Setting up a collaborative space
• Incorporating and bookmarking audio / video
• OneNote as a research tool
When: Thursday 7 June 2012, 9.00am - 11.30am or 1:00pm - 3:30pm

Online records management training
Staff can now refresh their knowledge of records management with Records Management Basics online training and TRIM Refresher Training.
Each module contains a video presentation and downloadable pdf manual. Records Management Services staff would be delighted to hear your feedback.
