New Senior DVC and Provost at Swinburne

Swinburne University of Technology Vice-Chancellor Professor Linda Kristjanson has announced the appointment of Professor Jennelle Kyd to the role of Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost.

Professor Kyd is currently DVC (Academic and Research) and Acting Vice-Chancellor (International) at Central Queensland University (CQU). She is also President of the university's Academic Board and has led the development of CQU's strategic change agenda over the past five years.

"Professor Kyd brings extensive academic leadership experience to Swinburne," Professor Kristjanson said. "She has held a number of senior university positions in which she has set the strategic agenda and led the implementation of initiatives that have resulted in significant performance enhancements.

"Her strong collaborative approach means that she will further support Swinburne's commitment to engagement with industry, government and the community. This remains vital in ensuring that we provide our students with a high quality education and achieve research excellence.

"I am delighted to welcome Professor Kyd to Swinburne University and the broader Swinburne community. The breadth of her leadership in higher education and research will be a particular strength as we implement our vision to be Australia's leading university of science, technology and innovation."

Professor Kyd previously held the position of Chair of Forensic Science and Head of the National Centre for Forensic Studies at the University of Canberra. She also served as Head of the university's Health Research Centre.

Professor Kyd has a significant research portfolio in biotechnology, immunology and medical microbiology with an emphasis on vaccine development for the prevention of middle ear and respiratory infections. She leads an international group working to achieve a vaccine for the prevention of bacterial middle ear infection in children.

She is an inventor of commercially valuable intellectual property of vaccine components for Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Professor Kyd is Director of the Australian Institute of Policy and Science Professor Kyd and was a recipient of a Tall Poppy Award in 2002. She is also Director at the Co-operative Research Centre for Rail Innovation and Director at Rail Innovation Australia and previously a Director of the Queensland Consortium for Integration Resources Management.

Professor Kyd said she was honoured to be joining Swinburne and contributing to the development of the university's vision.

"I am looking forward to initiating, leading and managing change to build a stronger institution, aligning teaching with research strengths and development opportunities," she said.

Professor Kyd will take up her position at Swinburne on 1 September 2012.
