Swinburne student Aaron McNeilly was presented with an iPad this morning for winning a competition to name the new student services building, calling it ‘The George’.
Currently under construction, ‘The George’ is a seven storey building that will house student services including study areas, a games room, gym, multi-faith prayer rooms and health services.
“I’m really looking forward to using the student spaces next year,” McNeilly said. “I live on campus, and it will be great to have somewhere to socialise and study”.
The competition was run through the Swinburne Student Amenities Association (SSAA), whose CEO Andrew McFarland donated the iPad to the winner along with Dr Andrew Smith from Facilities and Services Group.
McNeilly’s entry was chosen from over 500 suggestions by a panel of members from Swinburne’s Facilities and Services Group, Student Services and the SSAA.
According to Smith, ‘The George’ is a name that is uniquely Swinburne.
“The panel felt it was a cool name which would resonate with students, references our founder George Swinburne and the 'Ask George' feedback system,” Smith said.
The building will be officially known as the George Swinburne Building, and will open in 2011 for George Swinburne’s 150th birthday.
