Swinburne student support appeal launched

Swinburne University of Technology has launched its annual appeal, focusing on raising funds for students facing financial or other forms of hardship.

Many students face difficult decisions that may jeopardise their continuing education.

Students like Rachael Young (pictured) are experiencing financial hardships that may force them to interrupt their coursework or make difficult decisions about immediate priorities between working and study hours.

The 2011 Student Support Appeal will raise funds to assist these students directly through Student Services Achievement Awards.

In 2010, 34 students were awarded $500 bursaries for demonstrating perseverance and adaptability while overcoming the challenges and obstacles in their lives.

Director of Development Michael Grigoletto hopes this year's appeal will benefit many more students struggling with difficult circumstances.

"We were delighted with the response to last year's appeal, and are excited that this year's appeal will enable us to support even more students.

"Receiving the awards not only relieves financial burden for these students but gives them fantastic encouragement and affirmation to continue with their studies.

"Many of last year's recipients have told us what a huge difference receiving the scholarship made to their motivation and self-confidence."
