Academic Publishing in Design Seminar
Date posted: Monday 2 Apr 2012
The seminar is open to the public and free: Wednesday 18 April, 10am Prahran campus.
Design research is rapidly gaining in importance and prominence. While a relatively new field of inquiry, the knowledge generated can have far-reaching implications. It can transcend disciplinary boundaries from design into sustainability, economics, health, community well-being, and citizenship engagement.
Dr Gjoko Muratovski, Swinburne Design Academic and Seminar Chair, believes that design academics today must be committed to enriching the field of design and enhancing its relevance in a broader context.
“One of the greatest challenges in doing that comes in developing rigorous research that can be published to the wider academic community,” says Dr Muratovski.
Elizabeth Vella, Palgrave Macmillan’s Publishing Manager, has 12 years of publishing experience. She will present on issues ranging from preparing book and textbook proposals, to submitting journal papers, and discuss aspects of defining target markets, reviewing processes, and publishing contracts.
University Distinguished Professor Ken Friedman, Dean of Swinburne’s Faculty of Design, will also discuss issues of the importance of academic design publishing in global context. Professor Friedman is an editor of journals Artifact and the Journal of Design Research, and a member of the editorial board of such journals as Design Studies, Design and Culture, and the International Journal of Design.
