Public lecture on design in China

Date posted: Friday 29 Oct 2010

Internationally renowned design academic, Dr Wendy Suiyi Wong will review graphic design in China over the last three decades in the third of a series of free public lectures hosted by Swinburne University's Faculty of Design,

She will also discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the design industry and design education today and in coming years.

"In 1978, China announced its Reform and Opening Policy. Massive economic and cultural changes followed," Wong said. "As in every field, these changes meant dramatic developments in the design industry.

"Over the course of the past decade, a new generation of young Chinese designers has emerged to gain international recognition in various fields of design. The changes they bring with them are shaping the new landscape of Chinese design."

The lecture will survey the emergence and interaction of inter-regional professional organisations, graphic design competitions, design business opportunities, and academic exchanges.

It will conclude with a look at the challenges facing the construction of a contemporary Chinese design identity.

Wong is currently associate professor at the Department of Design of the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University in Toronto, Canada where she conducts research on Chinese and Hong Kong visual culture.

She is the author of Hong Kong Comics: A History on Manhua, has published four books for Chinese readers and numerous articles in academic and trade journals.

Wong has curated two major exhibits on Chinese design, at the Cooper Union School of Art in 2000, and Design Exchange in Toronto in 2008. She taught in Hong Kong and the United States before moving to Canada.
