Swinburne University of Technology
Swinburne is an innovative education institution that provides quality career-oriented education. Our strong technological base and links with industry are complemented by innovative research centres and strong international partnerships.
Who are we?
Swinburne was established in 1908 as a college that provided technical education to people in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. In 1992 Swinburne gained university status and quickly expanded to include campuses at Croydon, Lilydale, Prahran, and Wantirna, in addition to the main campus at Hawthorn.
Swinburne is a dual-sector university offering both TAFE courses and higher education degrees. We have more than 30,000 students studying across five campuses and enrolled in more than 280 programs.
We have six faculties and five TAFE schools. Students can enrol in courses in business, design, engineering, ICT, humanities and social sciences, health, service industries and sustainability.
Swinburne has a unique learning environment. We place a strong emphasis on building career-ready graduates, with more than 15,000 students study in the workplace through our pioneering Industry-based Learning (IBL) program.
We are also the first university in Australia to offer a guaranteed institution-wide articulation program. The Guaranteed Entry Scheme gives students guaranteed entry into an undergraduate program when they enrol in a Swinburne TAFE diploma or advanced diploma. Students receive credit for their diploma or advanced diploma studies, fast-tracking them into later stages of an undergraduate degree.
Swinburne also implements a highly-commended Professional Learning Model. The model enhances Swinburne’s traditional focus on real-world learning and industry-linked teaching. It aims to provide undergraduates with flexibility and opportunity, through career assistance, elective units to diversify career profile, work-integrated learning opportunities, options to pace (accelerate or spread) study, industry-oriented projects and cross-discipline study options.
High-impact research
Swinburne has earned a reputation for high-impact research. This has been achieved through leading-edge research centres and a willingness to respond to industry and government priorities, and society needs. We focus on niche and emerging areas, and we’re driven to find innovative research solutions to real world problems.
We have 15 designated research centres. We’re also a part of world-class research collaborations in defence materials technology, manufacturing, micro-photonics, sustainability and solar technology. Our most recent collaborations are with China-based Suntech Power to develop next generation solar technology and with Boeing to develop new competitive aerospace manufacturing.
By keeping our research focused we have developed our strengths in the areas of advanced manufacturing technologies, astrophysics, biotechnology, cognitive sciences, computing, design, micro and nano-engineering, optics and applied laser technology, and social sustainability and wellbeing.
Swinburne is committed to being one of the top ten research institutions in Australia. In the period 2008-2012, Swinburne has strategically invested more than $250 million in infrastructure and research, strengthening our reputation for research teaching and excellence.
A global perspective
Swinburne established a campus in Sarawak, Malaysia in 2000. The Sarawak campus is ranked a top tier university by the Malaysian Government. We also have country offices in Vietnam and China, and maintain a significant presence in India.
We have developed strategic international partnerships. We deliver the Global Leadership Program in collaboration with Northeastern University in Boston and a dual masters degree in partnership with Northumbria University in the UK.
We have a student mobility rate higher than the national average, and formal exchange arrangements with over 80 countries around the world.
Swinburne is also a member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities and the Community Colleges for International Development.
Swinburne is ranked one of the top 500 universities in the world by both The Times Higher Education – QS World University Ranking and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (formerly Shanghai Jiaotong Academic Ranking of World Universities).
