Act

The University is governed by the Swinburne University of Technology Act 2010, under Victorian legislation.


Council

Council is the University’s governing body. Its primary responsibility is to manage the affairs of the University, including:

  • Approving statutes and regulations
  • Ensuring appropriate University policies and procedures and policy framework are in place
  • Determining the structure of the University and its divisions
  • Approving the mission and strategic direction of the University
  • Ensuring that long term and short term planning is undertaken, endorsed and implemented
  • Approving the annual budget and business plan, annual accounts and Annual Report
  • Overseeing and monitoring the academic activities of the University
  • Providing oversight of University management and reviewing its performance
  • Ensuring the financial stability of the University

The Chancellor is the Chair of the Council.

The Council delegates to the Vice-Chancellor the authority to undertake general management of the University. In turn, the Vice-Chancellor is accountable to the Council.


Academic Senate

The Academic Senate is Swinburne’s academic governance forum, spanning TAFE, higher education and Swinburne College.

The Senate provides advice to Council on the conduct and content of programs and courses.

Responsibilities of the Academic Senate include:

  • Managing academic policies, procedures and regulations
  • Accreditation and reaccreditation of courses
  • Requirements for the awarding of degrees, diplomas and certificates
  • Maintaining the quality of courses
  • Evaluation of courses
