Swinburne has earned a big reputation for high-impact research. We have leading-edge research centres that respond to industry and government priorities, and society needs.
Our research focuses on niche and emerging areas, and we’re driven to find innovative research solutions to real world problems.
Our research strengths are in the areas of advanced manufacturing technologies, astrophysics, biotechnology, cognitive sciences, computing, design, micro and nano-engineering, optics and applied laser technology, and social sustainability and wellbeing.
Delivering industry outcomes
At Swinburne we seek solutions for real problems. So we collaborate with industry to ensure our graduates are work-ready, and able to meet the challenge of industry needs.
Our students can take an Industry-Based Learning program as part of their course. Or do an exchange program with one of more than 60 institutes around the world.
But our industry connections extend beyond the classroom. We collaborate with industry in the commercialisation of major research projects. We also deliver customised training to more than 170 businesses and organisations.
Facilitating a global perspective
Swinburne provides a genuine international outlook. The need for international and intercultural perspectives means we integrate global dimensions into everything we do.
We are a member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities and the Community Colleges for International Development. We have a campus at Sarawak, Malaysia and we have an international partnership with Northeastern University in Boston in delivering the Global Leadership Program.
Swinburne is named amongst the top universities in the world in both the prestigious Shanghai Jiao Tong University Academic Rankings and Times Higher Education QS World University Rankings.
Embracing sustainability
At Swinburne we’re committed to genuine sustainability. Our social and built environments are designed with the most up-to-date sustainability principles.
We’re home to the National Centre for Sustainability and we were the first Australian university to sign a sustainability covenant with the Environment Protection Authority.
Sustainability is embedded in our teaching, learning and research, so that we are working on practical solutions for the 21st Century. We know our future depends on it.
