Vice-Chancellor - Professor Ian Young
Professor Ian Young, BE (Hons), MEngSc, PhD, FIEAust, FTSE  | Professor Ian Young was appointed Vice-Chancellor and President of Swinburne University of Technology in December 2003. Prior to this appointment, he held the dual positions of Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences and Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) at the University of Adelaide. He has also held positions at the University of New South Wales, James Cook University and the Max Planck Institut für Meteorologie, Germany. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, a Master of Engineering Science and a PhD in Ocean Engineering, all from James Cook University. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia and a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. Professor Young’s research focus is on coastal and ocean engineering and particularly wind generated ocean waves. His distinguished academic career spans more than 20 years and he has published a number of books and is the principal author and co-author of numerous journal papers and more than 100 research papers. He has been the recipient of numerous research grants from a range of sources including the Australian Research Council and the US Office of Naval Research. As a consultant, Professor Young has worked extensively with the coastal and offshore oil industries in Australia, Europe, the USA and Asia particularly in the development of economical and environmentally sustainable offshore oil and gas production. |
