Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Higher Education, Professor Dale Murphy

Professor Murphy joined Swinburne in 1989 after eight years in industry and an academic career that included the University of Oxford and the Prince of Songkla University in Thailand. He became Head of the Department of Physics at Swinburne in 1992 before being appointed Head of the School of Biophysical Sciences and Electrical Engineering in 1994.

In 2001, Professor Murphy was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor and oversees five Faculties and Swinburne’s Sarawak campus in Malaysia. He has led the Higher Education Division through a major reorganisation to enable it to realise its ambition to become recognised as a University of teaching and research excellence.

Professor Murphy’s research interests are in the design of biomedical instrumentation, particularly in techniques such as impedance tomography and optical sensors.

He is also a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and a Member of the Australian Institute of Physics. Professor Murphy was recently named as one of Australia’s ’100 Top Most Influential Engineers’ by the Institution of Engineers Australia.
