Ern works as an organisation change consultant in universities and other public sector organisations drawing on expertise in workplace and action learning among professional workgroups. He has been Head of Dept, a Faculty Director of Teaching Quality and Dean at RMIT. He has facilitated workgroup use of capability approaches in service planning and capacity building. His research interests include studying influences on students' approaches to learning, how to enhance 'learning for meaning', and leveraging off workplace learning.
