My current research interests are split between health and safety-related workplace performance and entrepreneurship and innovation. My focus at Swinburne is on attracting national competitive grants, producing high-quality publications, and supervising PhD students.
Professor Langan-Fox is Professor of Management, a Registered Psychologist, and an Industrial/ Organisational Psychologist with 26 years experience. She has a PhD from The University of Melbourne, a Masters of Philosophy (by Research) from The University of Nottingham, U.K., a Bachelor of Education (Hons, 1st Class, – 4 yrs), from the University of East Anglia, U.K., and a Certificate of Education from the Cambridge Institute of Education, U.K., which conferred registered teacher status (U.K; Victoria).
Janice’s research in psychology spans several sub-disciplines: management, health, and human factors. She started her career in industry where she worked for 10 years in manufacturing, shipping, distribution, travel and law, prior to entering academia as a Lecturer at RMIT University teaching organizational behaviour. She then took up a pure research position in 1988 at Monash University as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, and in 1991 became a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology, The University of Melbourne where she stayed for 15 years becoming Associate Professor in 2002. Janice was appointed a research Professor of Management in 2005 at Swinburne University of Technology. In 2007, she was made an Honorary Principal Fellow by the Psychology Department, University of Melbourne. Janice has been a visiting scholar at the University of Queensland, University of Nottingham, University of London, and Georgia Institute of Technology.
Janice has taught at RMIT University, Deakin University, The University of Melbourne; in TAFE; in Middle and Secondary Schools; and in industry. She has supervised to completion more than 50 student theses, and examined more than 100 theses. Her current research focuses on developing tools and systems for addressing adverse events in hospitals; assessing safety cultures and performance in relation to goals and targets; revealing the impact of motives, social networks, and competencies on entrepreneurial endeavours; determining task sharedness in teamwork and team effectiveness; and human factors issues such as boredom, fatigue, workload, stress and individual differences in human-automation interaction, and the design and development of new air traffic control systems (e.g., NextGen).
Janice has more than 130 refereed publications:- monographs, edited books, book chapters, teaching tools and texts, international peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, on-line articles, and articles in professional magazines. She has served on editorial boards for many international journals including Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Australian Psychologist, Stress & Health, Journal of Occupational and Organisational Psychology, International Journal of Selection and Assessment, European Journal of Work and Organisational Psychology, and acts as occasional reviewer for journals such as Human Factors, Personality and Individual Differences, Journal of Business Venturing, and others.
Grants awarded to Janice, are worth more than$1.8 million, and which have been awarded by the Australian Research Council, International Grants for Research, Universities, philanthropic Foundations, and industry. She has held research contracts with organizations including Ericsson (Australia) Pty.Ltd; Ford Motor Company; Vodafone Telecommunications; Australia Post (Vic/Tas); Australia Post (H.Q.); Department of Industry, Technology and Regional Development, Government of Victoria; Myer/Grace Bros; Ansett Airlines; Worksafe Australia; Victoria Police Academy, Victoria Police Association, and Victoria Police HQ.
At Swinburne, Janice has been Head of Group for the Management & Entrepreneurship academic group which included around 28 academics. She has also been on a number of Faculty committees including the Faculty Executive Committee, Faculty Research Committee, Faculty Staffing & Resources Committee and has served on University committees such as Ethics; Research Higher Degrees Executive;Internal Grants and the Academic Board. At the University of Melbourne and in industry, Janice has held leadership positions and roles on steering committees and teams, reference groups, and working parties involved in selection and promotions; undergraduate, research and graduate studies; affirmative action; strategic planning; training; enterprise bargaining; and human resources.
Janice has made a particularly vital contribution to the development of Australian Industrial/Organisational (I/O) psychology through her teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level research, thesis supervision, course Convenorships (Directorships), and industry Practicum design, development and supervision. She has served the Australian Psychological Society in working for the Organisational College in Organisational Course Approvals and Accreditation, the National Executive, and in Chairing the 5th Australian Industrial/Organizational Psychology conference in 2003. Janice is frequently asked by the media for comment on organizational and employee workplace issues and has conducted interviews for television, newspapers and radio.
