How your organisation benefits

Gain a New Perspective

Past experience has shown that a fresh set of eyes and a hungry attitude can lead to innovative and creative solutions.

Multi-Disciplinary Angle

Students drawn from myriad of disciplines are mixed together to work on your business problem. This ensures that the problem is examined from multiple angles with inputs from the key drivers of business.

Quality Mentoring

Project teams are mentored by an experienced academic staff member and students undertake a 12-weeks preparatory course before commencing work on their Capstone Projects.

Extensive Collective Time

Each student is expected to work for at least eight hours per week on your project. This equates to over 3,500 people hours spent analysing your particular organisation and business problem.

What projects have students worked on in the past?

Swinburne’s Capstone Project has been running for over 10 years. Past projects have addressed business challenges such as; stagnation in revenue, retention of talent, improving productivity, developing a business plan, targeting a new market or developing a new product.

Some of the most recent partners include;

  • Australian Bureau of Statistics
  • Cengage Publishing
  • Focus Fitness
  • Red Nose Day

Success Story

Focuss Fitness is a fitness service provider with a wide range of delivery modes. They commissioned a Capstone Project to gain fresh perspectives on their market segments.

Industry Perspective

"All of the students did an amazing job and presented us with opportunities to grow the business over the next 12 months. I have already implemented some of these suggestions and have found the students offered a lot of value to our business."
Rocco Sorace, Director Focuss Fitness

Student Perspective

Capstone student, Jennifer Jordan found the project both exciting and rewarding.

The Capstone project was a great opportunity to utilise the knowledge and skills we learned during our studies. It was an exciting experience working with a real client and it pushed us to do our best job.

How Capstone Projects Work

As an industry partner, your business problem will be assessed by approximately eight teams comprising six students all working on your project for a semester (12 weeks) while being mentored by an experienced academic.

Teams are charged with generating well-informed, creative solutions to your problems. Their solutions will be delivered to your organisation via a report and a concise presentation at the end of the project. The report will present recommendations and include any associated risks and implementation issues.

All students will have already undertaken a 12 week program specifically designed to prepare them for real world projects.

In addition, relevant industry and discipline-specific resources pertaining to client projects will be provided to the project teams by Swinburne University of Technology

The formal presentation delivery is followed by a concluding networking event hosted by Swinburne University of Technology. Organisations are invited to continue their discussions at this flagship event.

What level of commitment is involved?

Organisational contractual obligations are minimal; there will be no financial outlays or expectations of future commitments. All matters relating to confidentiality will be strictly adhered to.

A representative of your organisation will be expected to visit our Hawthorn campus three times during the semester. The first visit will give you an opportunity to brief the teams on the relevant aspects of your firm and problem. The second visit is to see the progress of the project. The final visit will involve delivery of the project report and presentations where you will have a chance to discuss the tailored solutions proposed by the students.

Your representative will be the key contact with the supervising academic. Students will not approach your organisation directly unless you have permitted this.
