Measuring the key human factors issues in future air traffic control systems

Professor Janice Langan-Fox, Head of the faculty's Management and Entrepreneurship group, has had an article accepted for publication in the prestigious 'Human Factors' journal. The journal's 2008 impact factor is 1.529 and 5 year impact factor is 1.870.

Professor Langan-Fox's article, titled "Human Factors Measurement for Future Air Traffic Control Systems", was co-authored with her colleagues Michael Sankey and James Canty. Two highlights are the table and figure at the end of the manuscript which help give direction regarding the measurement of key human factors issues in future air traffic control systems, which are heavily automated.

In addition to several refereed conference proceedings, this article is Professor Langan-Fox's second publication on the design and measurement of future air traffic control systems; the first - "Human-Automation Teams and Adaptable Control for Future Air Traffic Management" - was published earlier this year in the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics (also co-authored by James Canty & Michael Sankey).

Both articles arose out of Professor Langan-Fox's 2007 ARC (Linkage) grant - "Air Traffic Controller Competencies and Selection" ($252,936), and from an invited keynote address last year, titled "Keeping the Human in the Loop: From ATCos to ATMs", presented at the Smart Decision Making for Clean Skies Conference at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra.

The premier publication of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 'Human Factors' is a peer-reviewed journal presenting original papers of scientific merit that contribute to the understanding and advancement of the systematic consideration of people in relation to machines, systems, and environments. Articles encompassing basic and applied research, quantitative and qualitative approaches to theory, evaluative reviews of the literature, and state-of-the-art reviews cover all aspects of the human-system interface.

'Human Factors' also features special sections highlighting important areas. In recent years, topics have included fatigue, elderly drivers, training, measurement, visual displays, assisting people with functional impairments, human information processing, expert systems, and vigilance. These special issues can be used as supplementary materials in the classroom. The journal is also endorsed by the International Ergonomics Association.

Swinburne lecturer involved in innovative web project in the legal industry

Faculty of Business and Enterprise lecturer William Lye was recently involved in the design, development and launch of the Melbourne Technology Engineering Construction Chambers (MTECC) website. This is his second major web project using an innovative model to market the services of Barristers practising in technology, engineering and construction matters - his first was the Commercial Bar Association of Victoria website (launched in November 2008), which was considered a world first in the way a legal association sought to present its members.

Mr Lye said that “MTECC is likely to be the first virtual chambers representing Barristers with expertise in technology, engineering and construction law”. While the concept of Barristers getting together to set up independent chambers in different buildings is nothing new, he said that “for Barristers to form a guild with a specialist focus on matters involving technology, engineering and construction and using the world wide web to promote their expertise as a virtual chambers is an innovative way to market their respective services."

The website states that “the members of MTECC have a well deserved reputation for ‘hands on’ active involvement in the planning and preparation of cases involving all the forms of ADR currently used in resolution of technology, engineering and construction disputes.”

William Lye is a sessional lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Marketing at Swinburne, and a practising Barrister at the Victorian Bar.

ALTC Citation for Dr Alex Maritz

Dr Alex MaritzAssociate Professor Alex Maritz recently received an Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Citation for excellence in entrepreneurship education. This was the first time a Faculty of Business and Enterprise staff member has ever been awarded this national prestigious award.

Dr Alex Maritz’s citation application encapsulates academic leadership, in designing and implementing research-led and entrepreneurial approaches to coursework Masters education, within the discipline area of entrepreneurship. To implement the optimal enhancement of the entrepreneurial experience, he applies alternative pedagogies in the experiential classroom. He inspires and motivates entrepreneurship students through entrepreneurship-directed and experiential approaches involving an appropriate integration of academic and practice theory. He further conceptualises the entrepreneurship teaching model incorporating triggering events, knowledge, experience and action; with a teaching philosophy of integrating theory for practice's sake. This resembles a wholistic learning experience, culminating in entrepreneurial outcomes for students.

Alex also recently won the FBE Teaching and Learning Excellence Award, and we invite all AGSE students to attend one of Alex's innovative classes.

ARC Linkage Grant success for FBE

The Faculty of Business and Enterprise (FBE) has been successful in the latest Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant round. A team including Phil Taylor, Libby Brooke, Nita Cherry, Janet Gregory and Margaret Steinberg has secured $330,000 (excluding industry funding) to study the work-life transition issues facing older women. The partner organisations involved are ESS Super, Westpac Banking Corporation and UniSuper.

There are significant gaps in knowledge in relation to the later life experiences of work and retirement among older women, whose career opportunities and trajectories, experiences of balancing work and personal aspects of life, social relationships both at work and in the community, financial security, and lived experience of ageing, may differ from those of men. As a consequence of such gaps, public policymaking and that of employers is based on an
incomplete understanding of older women's orientations and attitudes. The study will develop policy and practice recommendations for structuring and enriching women's later job and retirement opportunities.

MEI student launched the Commercial Bar Association of Victoria Website

Final year Swinburne Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation student and also practising barrister, William Lye, officially launched on 13 November 2008 the web site of the Commercial Bar Association of Victoria (CommBar) at a function attended by over 300 guests at the Supreme Court of Victoria’s library, hosted by the Honourable Chief Justice Marilyn Warren, AC.

Mr Lye, who also holds a Bachelor of Science, majoring in computers, and a Master of Laws, was one of the principal architects of the web site.

Having spent 6 months working pro bono on the design and development, the web site is considered to be a world first in the way in which a legal association seeks to present its members. CommBar is an association within the Victorian Bar and the web site presents its members practising in commercial law in a unique, creative and innovative way.

Commenting on the website, Mr Bill Jarrad, founder of mindwerx.com and current MEI lecturer in Creativity and Innovation said “For a professional association, it is the ability to connect people and give a face to the organisation that really makes the difference”.

Mr Lye said that he had to dig deep into his learning in the MEI as he took on the project without any funding, then had to pitch to get a small amount of funding, and boot strapped the rest. It was no different to running an entrepreneurial start up.

“The MEI provided me with the necessary tools to undertake strategic market analysis and design, build effective teams, and craft powerful imagery using presentation tools” Mr Lye said.

With the highly successful launch under his belt, Mr Lye and his team are now looking at undertaking an even larger project.
