FBE Teaching Excellence Awards
Professor David Hayward, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Enterprise and Associate Professor Irene Tempone (pictured on the left) presented awards to its oustanding teachers for 2007 during a Faculty meeting held on Friday 14 March 2008. The Teaching Excellence Awards were presented to two staff members as follows:
Julie Gerstman
(pictured left centre) for her work in peer mentoring in Macroeconomics. Peer tutorials rely on students initiating questions, often relating to contextual issues not covered in sufficient depth in lectures and tutorials, and are attended on a needs basis by students. In follow up research of attendees, one of the reasons given for attendance was that it is easier to ask questions of a peer than a normal tutor. The mentors also report considerable benefits of being involved in the program. Julie receives the perpetual trophy for 12 months, an individual trophy, $1500 to put towards further developing her teaching and a certificate of teaching excellence.

Subhash ABhayawansa (pictured left centre) for his work in developing online quizzes for students of Management Decision Making with audiovisual online feedback and access to a discussion forum on the topic of Tactical Decision Making. This was not part of the assessment of the unit of study, but from further research was found to assist students with not only their understanding of the topic but their level of interest in the topic. Subhash receives an individual trophy, $600 to put towards further developing his teaching and a certificate of teaching excellence.
The winners will now apply for the Vice Chancellors Awards as the Faculty representatives, and possilby the Carrick Teaching Excellence Awards.
