Marketing Student Profile
Riley Badawy - Bachelor
of Business (Marketing)
Riley completed six months
of his IBL placement as the Marketing Assistant at Siemens Singapore,
and is currently undertaking another six month placement locally
at Baker's Delight.
For Riley, the IBL year has been a great learning curve,
both professionally and personally.
Siemens Private Limited, Singapore
Assistant to the Marketing Manager of the Information & Communications
Networks/Mobile Division
6 month placement - January to July 2004
"Deciding to complete my IBL overseas was a tough decision,
but one that I will never regret. Unlike completing an IBL position
locally, completing an IBL overseas gives you so many different
skills that are not necessarily all work specific. Being thrown
into the deep end and learning how to find an apartment, cook
and clean after yourself and build friendship networks from scratch
were admittedly challenging at first, but once I overcame the
challenge of doing things I’d never done before, I was
left with an invaluable level of confidence and independence.
Working in an office with a wide mix of cultures helped
improve my communication and listening skills and overall
it opened my eyes a lot. Going from living with my
parents in the suburbs of Melbourne to living in an
apartment in Singapore, really brought me down to earth,
giving me the most amazing experiences and memories
that that I’ll keep for life.
I am so happy I chose an international IBL because
not only have a learnt so much about marketing and
business, but more importantly I’ve learnt a
lot about myself. I’ve now got great friends
from all over the world and some brilliant memories
that I could not have had if I’d chosen a local
IBL position".
Marketing
Support IBL at Bakers Delight Holdings Ltd, Camberwell
"My
IBL at Bakers Delight has been an amazing, invaluable experience.
From my very first day, I knew that Bakers Delight was a place
for me. The biggest shock for me was my role that was previously occupied
by a full-time worker. I still can’t believe that my job
is a real job with real responsibilities, deadlines and requirements
that I must independently meet. At no point throughout this time
have I ever felt like “just an IBL”; quite the contrary
actually, everyone at work has welcomed me as another member of
their team, regularly asking me for opinions and advice on current
and future jobs. I’m always included in regular team meetings
and as time is going on, I’m becoming more vocal and sharing
my opinions more regularly because I know that I now have a small
amount of experience to base them on.
As marketing is such a broad area, I was unsure of what venue
I wanted to explore prior to working at Bakers Delight. Now, based
entirely on the love I have of my new responsibilities, I would
like to continue to work in the advertising area through consumer-based
products like food and beverages.
At a non work-based level, I cannot explain how big a confidence
booster my IBL has been. Meeting bakers from all over the
country to help solve their marketing issues has been such
an eye-opener of the “real world”. The most challenging
aspect is realising that even though I’m only 22, people
from all over the country are relying on me to help their
business flourish
and grow".
