Always proof read/spellcheck anything you write, errors create a bad impression

If you're making a direct approach, have you clearly specified the sort of position you're seeking?

Have you conveyed a good self image by the positive words you've used?

Match yourself to the Selection Criteria listed in the advertisement/position description

Focus on what you have to offer an employer

Do validate your claims of skills or knowledge with an example

Make abundantly clear your enthusiasm for the job/company

Do know what you are applying for

Use action verbs to describe your transferable skills

Take phrases and words from sample letters but realize that if you do this, your letter may look the same as many other Swinburne students

Be capable of discussing ANY sentence you put in your letter

Be clear and concise

Use simple and uncomplicated sentences

Have your letter checked by at least one other person before you submit it if possible

Don't use negative language

Don't sound desperate

Don't continually use the pronoun "I"

Don't rehash your resume

Have you taken care to produce the best letter you are capable of?
