Always proof read/spellcheck anything you write, errors create a bad
impression
If you're making a direct approach, have you clearly specified the
sort of position you're seeking?
Have you conveyed a good self image by the positive words you've
used?
Match yourself to the Selection Criteria listed in the advertisement/position
description
Focus on what you have to offer an employer
Do validate your claims of skills or knowledge with an example
Make abundantly clear your enthusiasm for the job/company
Do know what you are applying for
Use action verbs to describe your transferable skills
Take phrases and words from sample letters but realize that if you
do this, your letter may look the same as many other Swinburne students
Be capable of discussing ANY sentence you put in your letter
Be clear and concise
Use simple and uncomplicated sentences
Have your letter checked by at least one other person before you
submit it if possible
Don't use negative language
Don't sound desperate
Don't continually use the pronoun "I"
Don't rehash your resume
Have you taken care to produce the best letter you are capable of?
