Isn't it plain that we ought to have not simply one or two Professors of Foresight but whole Faculties and Departments of Foresight doing all they can to anticipate and prepare ...? |
- H.G. Wells, 19 November 1932. |
With the rise of the information society, sophisticated technologies and a rapidly globalising economy, human civilisation has reached a stage of development that faces not only unprecedented opportunities, but also unprecedented challenges. Leaders have to effectively deal with not just the speed of change but also with complexity, chaos, uncertainty and paradox. The future arises from a constant stream of human actions, decisions, strategies and commitments that have to be made in the present with as much skill, wisdom and foresight possible.
Foresight is an emerging professional field, and will arguably be a cornerstone of organisational success in the future. Organisations equipped with an effective foresight capability will be able to understand, and respond to, the emerging pattern of threats and opportunities, and to use this understanding to both manage risk and capitalise on opportunity. Strategic Foresight is the ability to create high quality forward views and to apply them in organisationally useful ways. These emerging insights can then be applied to help make better strategic decisions and to create wiser policy options.
Foresight thinking and methods can be applied widely in corporations, government, and societies to help better understand the different possible futures that lie ahead, enabling them the opportunity to influence the future and create greater sustainability by finding new directions.
