Our History - Built on Strong Foundations

Faculty of Business and Enterprise

Business at Swinburne has had a long history as a leading provider of innovative postgraduate and undergraduate education delivering programs on campus and at a number of offshore locations including Vietnam, Israel and Malaysia. In 2005 we launched the new Faculty of Business and Enterprise, combining the Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship (AGSE), the former School of Business, the Australian Foresight Institute and the Centre for Business, Work and Ageing.

The Faculty benefits from its strong links with employers and professional bodies both locally and internationally and our mission is focused on what matters most to our students - their development as emerging leaders who can deal with not just the speed of change, but with complexity, chaos, uncertainty and the challenges of today’s global competitive business environment.

We do this by offering our students industry relevant undergraduate and postgraduate programs delivered by commercially experienced academics. Our teaching is underpinned with our high quality and applied research that is relevant to industry, the community and other stakeholders.

Our internationalisation strategy is enhanced by the active pursuit of partner universities to create opportunities for our students to gain international learning experiences. Industry based learning programs, work placements in Europe and business study tours are offered, with strong links into Treviso in Italy, the European Union and the Asia Pacific Rim.

Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship

AGSE is the Faculty’s graduate school, which is built on deep foundations and with its own history. It is Australia’s only graduate school dedicated to the development of entrepreneurs. The AGSE has been leading teaching management at the postgraduate level for more than thirty years. We combine practical theory with experiential learning to develop entrepreneurial leaders and innovative thinkers who are practical and competent and have the requisite knowledge and the skills to succeed in an often turbulent and challenging environment.

Our focus on entrepreneurship is not narrow. It does not limit itself to the particular challenges of starting new business ventures, though that is of real importance to us. We also recognise the importance of corporate entrepreneurship where the imperatives of growth through renewal are stronger than ever. Our focus also includes the growing area of social entrepreneurship, which gives recognition to the vital importance of the entrepreneurial mindset in the government and community sectors.

We are proud of our heritage – and are committed to staying at the leading edge of our field of expertise. Hence research is of fundamental importance to us. Our research interests include most aspects of entrepreneurship, but have expanded with the development of the new faculty and include areas such as change management, international business and languages, strategic and entrepreneurial marketing, management and financial accounting.

Our DBA and PhD doctoral programs are an essential part of this strategy, as is is our annual research and teaching conference. The AGSE is founder of the renowned AGSE International Entrepreneurship Research Exchange, which is now in its fourth year. This conference is a forum for the exchange and celebration of entrepreneurship research undertaken around the world in a collegiate spirit.
