Family science nights

Are you looking for a way to involve parents in their child’s learning? Through our Family Science Nights, family members can join in experiments and share the fun of learning about the fascinating world of science together. We have experience organising events for 30 to 90 participants plus one parent in either classroom or carnival style

Classroom style

The classroom-style Family Science Night caters for up to 30 students and one parent per session. Students and their parents experience powerful science together in the 1-hour session which includes 3 to 4 activities and many more demonstrations. Choose one topic from our wide range of classroom lessons for an intimate experience.

Popular topics include Our Blue Marble, States of Matter, Light and Colour, Electricity, Natural Disasters, and Forces In Motion.

Carnival style

The carnival style Family Science Night caters for up to 180 participants (students and their families) per session. The fun-filled carnival atmosphere of these sessions run for 75 minutes and includes between six and eight exciting hands-on activity stations and many more demonstrations.

Each session includes a 30-minute presentation followed by 45 minutes of students and parents making their way through the wide selection of hands-on activities. These sessions cater for Prep to Year 6 students, and are made larger than life by our team of highly experienced and dynamic presenters. Teacher involvement is necessary.

Carnival style family science night topics

Carnival style family science nights can choose from the range of topics detailed below.

Spooky Science

Spooky Science covers all things slimy, creepy, and a little bit scary. All sciences are explored as students make self-inflating balloons, slimy souvenirs and spooky sounds, make things appear and disappear, and get familiar with creepy crawlies.

Awesome Atmosphere

This powerful session covers all sciences to explore the wonders of our life-giving atmosphere. Dry ice features in this carnival-like atmosphere as students experience the power and unexpected behaviour of air as it sucks, inflates, and smashes. Students and families also come face-to-face with inflating lungs and learn about how asthma is caused. It’s an unforgettable evening that will be the talk of the school for weeks!

Chemistry Carnival

This chemistry-based topic features the best of chemistry activities. A firm favourite with schools, expect all sorts of icky gloop, bouncy slime, dry ice, and heart-pounding explosions to make this an unforgettable evening.

The Human Body Gallery

Not for the faint-hearted, this biology-based topic is perfect for driving home the message of living a healthy lifestyle. The digestive, circulatory, and breathing systems are brought to life with exciting demonstrations, activities, and life body parts. Students and their families will go home convinced of the wonders of their bodies. And who wouldn't want to know how to make poo?

Energy

Energy is the ability to do work or cause a change. When we talk about energy, we often think about the electricity needed to power our homes. However, through hands-on activities, families will discover that energy is all around us and exists in many forms including heat, light, sound, chemical, elastic, magnetic, electrical and gravitational energy.

These activities will also highlight how all forms of energy are connected and families will have the opportunity to see how electrical energy may be generated from renewable energy sources such as light (solar panels) and wind (wind turbines).

Electricity

Discover what fun you can have with electricity in this exciting program which examines both static and current electricity. Understand how static electricity can make things move or stick together. Identify the differences between series and parallel circuits, use switches, buzzers and fans to create your own circuits, explore which materials conduct electricity and learn the principle behind electricity generation. (For smaller groups, Van DeGraaf generator demonstrations can be included.)
