Emotional intelligence in schools
Over the last decade, Swinburne has been developing ways to measure and enhance emotional intelligence in school environments.
Through unique research partnerships, our Aristotle-EI programs have helped students, teachers and school staff around the world enhance their emotional intelligence.
Aristotle-EI is a suite of programs developed by Swinburne to help students improve emotional intelligence competencies in the classroom. The programs are tailored to a range of developmental stages with lessons for Grade 1, 4, 5, and Year 8 and 10 students and focus on building the four dimensions of emotional intelligence:
- emotional recognition and expression
- understanding the emotions of others
- emotional reasoning
- emotional management and control.
Our research has shown that developing emotional intelligence in schools improves students' academic, sporting and leadership capabilities and enhances personal resilience and wellbeing.
Over the next few years we will collaborate with our partner schools to develop new programs for other year levels and specific groups such as children with autism and a program for boarding houses.
What is emotional intelligence?
Emotional intelligence can be defined as a series of abilities relating to how we understand, express, utilise in decision making and manage emotions. Children develop capacity and increase their ability to understand, effectively express and manage emotions as they get older, although there is great variability from child to child or adolescent to adolescent in these abilities.
