Swinburne Astronomy Online (SAO)
The Swinburne Astronomy Online (SAO) group gives students of this online course the opportunity to meet face to face for social, networking and learning opportunities.
Recognising that most students of the SAO program never get to meet, the group was setup to organise face-to-face gatherings in various countries around the world. AstroFest, an event open to the entire SAO community of alumni, students and instructors was born in 2007.
In August 2015 at the most recent AstroFest, people from around the world came together in Hawaii to share their love of all things astronomy. The get-ogether included a series of astronomy lectures, hands-on demonstrations, night observing, and social events.
The event was a fantastic opportunity for SAO members to visit the MW Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, one of the world’s premier optical observing sites. Since 2008, Swinburne has had unprecedented access to the observatory, thanks to an agreement with California University of Technology.
