Swinburne double honoured at Spanish film festival

Swinburne alumna Ana Kokkinos’s film Blessed has won the prize for best screenplay at Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival.

The film portrays struggling families in the suburbs and backstreets of Melbourne’s western suburbs, tracking several children over the course of a day and a night, then revisiting the same 24 hours from their mothers’ perspective.

Ana is a well-known scriptwriter and director supporting the development of the film industry in Victoria. She worked as a solicitor, researcher and industrial officer following completion of an Arts/Law degree, before undertaking postgraduate studies in Film and Production at Swinburne.

Her films have been featured in numerous festivals, including the Cannes International Film Festival, and her work has been honoured with a range of prestigious awards.

The screenplay for Blessed was co-written by Patricia Cornelius, Andrew Bovell, Melissa Reeves and Christos Tsiolkas, who also co-wrote the play Who's Afraid of the Working Class, on which it was based. Patricia teaches script writing for the performing arts department at Swinburne’s Prahran campus.
