Future Leaders Program
Future Leaders Program is a two-week study tour to China with an exciting opportunity for you to explore leadership concepts in an international context. Activities will include industry visits, seminars and meetings with government officials.
Expert speakers will cover diverse topics including ethical leadership, economic and trade development, globalisation and the challenges of leading in an era of vast social, environmental and technological change.
The program will give you hands-on leadership experience and valuable opportunities for networking and securing advantageous contacts. It will also give your resume a competitive edge and help you stand out from the crowd with future employers. What’s more, you’ll get to experience the many delights China has to offer.
As a participant in the program you will:
- Acquire a greater global awareness of socioeconomic and cultural differences, particularly between Eastern and Western cultures
- Develop entrepreneurial thinking in relation to working in partnership with China and Asia in general
- Gain the ability to recognise international opportunities in economic and social contexts
- Enhance your ability to identify the relevance of your Swinburne academic teachings to international practices
- Develop knowledge of international networks and the practice of networking
- Discover the traits, qualities and values necessary for international leadership
You will also have the opportunity to:
- Undertake industry tours and site visits to a range of companies and government agencies with a combination of both Australian and Asian interests
- Observe cultural differences and hear from speakers about cultural experiences within transnational organisations
- Observe cultural and linguistic differences
- Examine the concept of international networks through exposure to an Australian network in Asia
- Observe leadership values and traits through meeting global leaders and being exposed to entrepreneurial thinking
Dates
Future Leaders Program 2010 will commence on Monday 29 November, returning to Australia mid-December.
Costs and Funding
The program fee will be approximately $4000. The fee includes:
- Airfares and accommodation
- Insurance
- Basic Visa Costs
- Entry Fees
- Transport
Participants will need to pay for their own meals and bring personal spending money.
Every student will receive $1000 each from Swinburne Abroad Fund.
Eligible Candidates
The program will bring together a select group of high-achieving students from multiple disciplines.
To be eligible, you must:
- Be a current Swinburne student in your final year
- Be a consistent high achiever in your academic studies
- Display strong leadership potential
The program is especially tailored to mature-minded students who are in the final stages of their Swinburne degree.

Completed applications should be submitted to Swinburne Abroad by Tuesday 31 August 2010.
The Future Leaders Program is designed for high-achieving students and participation is based on a competitive selection process. The tour is limited to 18 participants – three students from each faculty.
Interested students are required to complete an application form and submit the following supporting documents:
- A one page application form
- An essay of 300-500 words
- An official Current Result Certificate
- One Academic Reference from a former or present academic adviser
- A typed resume detailing academic achievements, work history, leadership training, referee contact details and your own contact details
- A photocopy of your current passport
