Research Abroad

As a postgraduate research student at Swinburne, you have access to Swinburne’s international network, which may give you the opportunity to broaden your horizons in your research field.

Not only does undertaking research overseas give you a completely fresh perspective on your study, you’ll also have the chance to:

  • Challenge yourself by learning in a different academic environment
  • Gain access to world class facilities and top quality academia
  • Give your CV an international edge and increase your overseas job prospects
  • Establish networks of professional contacts
  • Develop cross-cultural communication skills for use in your current position

Many students undertaking qualifications by research decide to carry out research overseas. This is an opportunity to gather data and gain an international perspective on theory and thesis content.

Adding overseas experience to a research degree may include:

Independent Research or Research Projects Overseas

Research could be undertaken through an international exchange partner university - students may be able to access research centres at partner universities to undertake a semester or year of research.

An example of partnerships that could be accessed is the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU). The ECIU is a network of universities that supports Student Mobility at all levels.

Each student’s case is individual, so students are advised to speak to Swinburne Abroad about opportunities at exchange partner universities.

International Presentations of Research Findings at Conferences Overseas

  • Co-tutelle is a program where research studies are supervised jointly by academics from an Australian university and an overseas university, typically in France.
  • Co-tutelle opportunities are developed on an individual case basis, between the faculty, a host university, and the student. Students interested in negotiating such an opportunity should discuss options with their faculty.

Joint or Double Research Degrees, or Co-tutelle Research Degrees

  • International conferences are usually specific to the field of research. Students should approach their faculty and Swinburne Research for further information.

After considering your options, your Faculty and Swinburne Research can help you decide which is the most suitable overseas opportunity to suit your field of research, and determine whether there is any additional funding you can access to assist you.

"It's a great opportunity. I learn a new language, I get to travel, and I get two PhDs in the time it usually takes to earn one."
