Why Should I Go on Exchange?
Exchange programs offer many benefits, personally, academically and career-wise.
Am I Eligible for the Student Exchange Program?
Almost all undergraduate students have the opportunity to incorporate a semester or two abroad as part of their Swinburne degree. The program is designed for both local and international students, however AusAID funded students are not eligible for the program.
Applicants are expected to have a proven academic record of at least a Credit Average (65+).
Postgraduate and any other students not in these categories who are interested in participating should contact Swinburne Abroad.
Where Can I Go on Exchange?
Swinburne has developed Student Exchange agreements with over 90 institutions. Our partners are primarily based in Western Europe, North America, Scandinavia, Asia and the United Kingdom. Our partner institutions are carefully chosen to reflect the academic standards of Swinburne University of Technology.
Before you leave, you will set up a Study Plan with your Faculty or Division. This ensures that all of your studies abroad will be credited to your Swinburne degree, so going on Exchange should not extend your period of study at all.
There is a destination to suit you and your degree. You can study Business in the USA; Design in Korea; Mechanical Engineering in France; Biology in Sweden. The options are endless.
Want to know exactly where you can go?
How Much Will it Cost?
You do not pay tuition fees to the host institution. However, you are required to pay for your travel, accommodation and living costs.
To support students Swinburne Abroad administers a number of scholarships and travel grants. In 2011, Swinburne is able to award more scholarship oppotunities for most destinations.
When Can I Go on Exchange?
If you are completing a three-year undergraduate program you should plan to go in your second year. If you are undertaking a four-year double degree you could go in second or third year.
It is not always possible for you to go on Exchange in your final year, as Swinburne subjects become increasingly specialised and appropriate equivalents are not always available at our partner institutions.
Your Exchange program can be one or two semesters in length.
The Northern Hemisphere academic year starts in September each year and finishes in May. The autumn semester usually runs from mid/late August to late December/early January. The spring semester commences in January and ends in late May.
Some of our partner institutions operate on a trimester or quarterly basis. Your Exchange semester may depend on subject availability or whether you want to experience a Northern Hemisphere summer.
Remember: Student Exchange is more than travelling - it's about immersing yourself in another culture and making the host country your classroom. This is an opportunity to make yourself at home within a completely different environment.
