'Eliza Russell's Swinburne Story' transcript
I’m Eliza Russell and this is my Swinburne Story.
I think growing up in a fairly monocultural area of Melbourne, I always had a bit of a desire to see what was out there in the world, and working in a workplace culture that is very international is really important to me.
I’ve been at Swinburne for six years now and last year I was lucky enough to be awarded a scholarship to go and study a Masters overseas in Columbia.
I took a year’s study leave, and I’ve just returned back to my role as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator at Swinburne International.
I was a little bit apprehensive at first, I didn’t know if I should leave Swinburne to go and study, but I talked to my manager about it and she was really supportive.
Being an international student in Columbia made me better appreciate what it’s like to arrive in a new city, and the things that you have to face, and the challenges
So within the International office, I help to coordinate the marketing and communications activities, so I work with all the regional teams and coordinate the marketing that they’re doing.
I also work with Swinburne’s central Marketing department and liaise with them. I help inform them and their campaigns from an international perspective, and then I gain their knowledge about digital marketing and the sorts of advertising we should be doing.
I think having returned from overseas and bringing the knowledge back that I have from what I studied in Columbia, I’ll be able to apply that to my job, and maybe even have opportunities to use that knowledge elsewhere in Swinburne.
I do love my current role so I’m not planning on moving any time soon, but I think now that I have this experience and there are all these opportunities at Swinburne for career progression, I think the future is unknown - there are many possibilities.
