Book a space on campus

Swinburne offers a range of open and enclosed spaces that can be used for major events and incidental displays. Small foyer areas, undercover venues, selected walkways and small informal areas are suitable for display boards or tables. Availability will vary depending on the university calendar and suitability of use. 

Make a booking

  • Bookings can only be made by staff and internal organisations.
  • Requests must be received at least one week prior to the requested event date.
  • If you are serving food outdoors, please obtain a Streatrader statement of trade and send it to timetable@swin.edu.au.
  • For IT support please contact IT on servicedesk@swin.edu.au or 9214 5000.
  • If you have made an event space booking and no longer require the space, please advise us as soon as possible on 9214 5540 or via email

Hawthorn

The Atrium The Atrium is a naturally lit, covered space between the BA building and the Library. The space is filled with tables and chairs, and can be used in any weather. The commercial operation in the area cannot be moved and has the right to operate as normal during events. Noise restrictions are in force for the area.  John street 726m2
ATC lecture theatre The area offers fixed seating of 450 which can be extended to a capacity of 480. Fixed seating can be retracted to open up an area of 528sq metres and time consideration is required if seating is to be retracted. As the primary purpose of the Theatre is teaching activities, requests for its use need to address the Key Event Space Use Protocols. A small kitchenette is also available.  Burwood Road

ATC foyer The ATC foyer is a small irregular-shaped space, ideal for small University official functions and static displays. Larger functions of up to 480 may be acceptable when the theatre is not in use. Noise level restrictions are in force and must be adhered to. A small kitchenette is also available.  Burwood Road

ATC student common This space is available for official University functions outside of the main teaching periods and exams and can be only be booked in conjunction with the ATC Foyer.  Burwood Road

AD 108 cloisters Situated opposite the ATC theatre and Haddons, this is an ideal space for small functions and catering purposes for official functions. The area can handle functions up to 50 persons.  John Street

AD Walkway Pedestrian area between the AD building and the Union Cafe/ATC building. Events held within this area are subject to prior approval from Security. No events serving food permitted.    
The George level 1 (GS104)

Available for exclusive bookings during the day. It has a capacity of 42 and offers a protected area for small promotional displays and events. GS101 and GS151 can be booked but are thoroughfares, and as such must allow for egress during the day. No food preparation or cooking is allowable. Bookings for this space are available after 17:30.

Wakefield Street

 

 
The George level 2 GS217 can be booked for official functions and by student groups which are officially recognised by the University and registered with Swinburne Student Life. This is a Student Common Area, and students must be allowed free access during the day. No food preparation or cooking is allowable. Wakefield Street

EN Courtyard The area is directly outside the EN building. Events held in this area are subject to prior approval from Security.    
AD walkway

Pedestrian area between the AD building and the Union Cafe/ATC building. Events held within this area are subject to prior approval from Security. No events serving food permitted.

   
John street walkway

The area incorporates John Street pedestrian area between the railway overpass and the library steps. Events held in this area are subject to prior approval from Security.

The George Corner

This area includes the front of The George building, John Street and Wakefield Street. It is a synthetic grass area with a pedestrian path cutting diagonally across and fixed bench seats. Due to the synthetic surface, BBQs and hot food preparation must be conducted on the John Street verge. 

Wakefield Street  525m2
AGSE Corner Parallel to the John Street frontage of the AGSE on the Eastern side of John Street. It is the central point of the Hawthorn campus and offers a public frontage for small promotional displays. John & Wakefield Streets  150m2
Wakefield street gardens

The area in front of Swinburne College, including the undercover area near the fountain, can be booked for University official functions and by student groups that are officially recognised by the University and/or registered with Swinburne Student Life. The area is sensitive to environmental conditions so applicants will need to address the Key Event Space Use Protocols and Open Space policies.

UN310 Club

Located on the third floor of the UN building above the bookshop. It includes an external terrace. Alcohol can only be served if the event organiser has a temporary liquor licence.

John Street  150m2
TAFE Walkway

This area is the northern end of John Street and runs between the TAFE Buildings. As this is a main thoroughfare, it is suitable for small displays and stalls. There is a noise restriction for the area.
